Does anyone know of a good teacher in Sonoma County? I live in Petaluma. I'm hoping to find someone local to save me the trip to S.F. or the East Bay. Thanks!

Re: Looking for a teacher in Sonoma County
Sat, January 20, 2007 - 10:10 PMThere is a guy Richard who I've seen adds for in Santa Rosa. He does primarily Ba Gua Zhang and Qi Gong. If you're in the Sebastopol/Santa Rosa area at any of the hip coffee shops you should see an add.
In Sebastopol there is my old teacher who I used to practice with- Michael Guen. He practices Ba Gua Quan. I've been doing Ba Gua Zhang for 6 years, and I found his Ba Gua Quan to be very linear. But he does incorporate some deep, inner-personal work that I think he picked up from Spiritual Science while studying at Steiner College.
I've been thinking of getting back into Ba Gua Zhang with Richard. Perhaps I'll see you there.

Re: Looking for a teacher in Sonoma County
Sat, January 20, 2007 - 10:42 PMAn addendum to my previous post about Sonoma Ba Gua teachers- given that I know who you are now- Michael Guen does have a pretty strong focus on women's Ba Gua. Being male I haven't attended any of them, but from what I would hear when I was in the class it sounded pretty intense and magickal.
I remember you! I used to live with Peter van Gorter and you came over to our house once. Hallo! I've actually got a picture of Peter that same night in my photo album here.

Re: Looking for a teacher in Sonoma County
Thu, March 8, 2007 - 11:21 PMHmm,
That is a very interesting blog page. Have to say I didn't read all the blogs. Many of the names are not familiar, but a few were. The blog called "The Cult" with the bit about his harem didn't surprise me. I always was rather annoyed that we had no contact with the female side of the class and yet we were always compared against them (usually in a rather demeaning fashion). Dr. Guen always struck as having a bit over-developed ego, and a self-admitted tendency towards manipulation.
Ug, one of the dangers of becoming such a talanted Master of kung fu, and Ba Gua specifically as it is inherently "left hand path", is that the adept can fall to the ills of "gurudom" and cult status. Power is a seductive thing.
Be Careful,

Re: Looking for a teacher in Sonoma County
Fri, March 9, 2007 - 9:15 AMThank you both for sharing info about this. I personally met Dr. Guen and quickly came to my own conclusions. After that I read the blog, and it confirmed my feelings of unease. Needless to say, I will not be studying with him. I can see that he is an accomplished martial artist, but his personal approach doesn't work for me. Thanks again for the words of caution.

Re: Looking for a teacher in Sonoma County
Sat, March 10, 2007 - 10:00 PMGlad to be of help. The world of martial arts can be full of a lot of overly-developed egos- even in the interal styles it seems. I like that Michael incorporates some of the Western Mysteries into his teaching and an intensive-self study. He specifically draws from Anthroposophy- which I also incorporate. It kind of annoyed me that he didn't acknowledge that very much.
And yeah, there's something there that is not in alignment for how I view a true master of the system. The role any teacher like that is extremely delicate, and can easily become a tool for control and power over others. Michael has subtle and not so subtle ways of controlling the class. What the womens group is like I have no idea, cause I barely ever met any of em in the year that I studied with him. That to me was wierd. My first teacher mixed us and it kept a healthy vibe of community with it. I suppose I also didn't connect well with the Yin Fu style- again my previous Ba Gua teacher was the classic circle walking, animystic form style, where as the Guen Yin Fu is very linear, and the forms are numbered as opposed to animal forms. Not my cup o tea.
Perhaps we'll see you round the circle somewhere.

Re: Looking for a teacher in Sonoma County
Tue, December 22, 2009 - 8:54 AMPatrick,
The blogger you cited, Jalon (Rue) Anderson, began as my martial art student in 1993. After roughly two years, I refused to teach him further due to the extreme deviant behavior he was exhibiting. Embittered, he began an internet smear campaign against me, and to this day continues to refuse my invitations to meet (San Francisco-Santa Rosa) and reconcile the relationship. There are individuals who knew Jalon then from 1993 to 1995, and who are willing to speak on this behalf.
For fairness and objectivity a complementary reference would have been appreciated.

Re: Looking for a teacher in Sonoma County
Tue, December 22, 2009 - 9:15 AMHi Monique,
A concerned student pointed out this tribe discussion to me.
To prevent further misrepresentation about who I am, Yin Fu ba gua quan, and the men's and women's teachings, I shall seek to clarify points made by you and Patrick below that I feel have been misconstrued.
I hope that since 2007 you've found a good teacher and ba gua zhang practice, and that it is satisfying to you.
Regards,
Michael Guen, Ph.D. 12/22/09
